Manny Pacquiao Agrees to Take Less Money Than Mayweather to Make Fight Happen!

LAS VEGAS - MAY 01: A sign for Floyd Mayweather Jr. is held as boxing fans wait for the official weigh-in for the junior welterweight title fight between Ricky Hatton of England and Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines at the MGM Grand Garden Arena May 1, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was reported that on May 2 Mayweather will announce the end of his retirement to fight Juan Manuel Marquez. (Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images)

Michael Marley over at Boxing Examiner is reporting that Manny Pacquiao, in an effort to solidify the richest money fight in history, has voiced his willingness to accept a smaller purse than Floyd Mayweather.

The article goes on to explain that Pacquiao recently gave an interview to Nick Giongco of the Manila Bulletin where he stated, "I will take less money than Mayweather gets because the important thing is making the fight happen."

Given that expectations for the pot of this megafight are easily in the neighborhood of $100 million, Pacquiao won't make out too badly even if he has to suffer a 45-55 split.

But Pacquiao's pronouncement is encouraging news for the boxing world given the stumbling blocks so far in trying to make this fight happen. What remains the chief obstacle still seems to be the personal and business animosity between Bob Arum and Floyd Mayweather. Arum has a long track record of keeping his big fights in-house within his own stable of fighters. It remains to be seen if the fallout of letting the biggest monetary fight in history slip through his fingers is enough incentive for Arum to begin serious negotiations in earnest of making the fight happen. Rumors have swirled about Arum's willingness, only to have Floyd Mayweather correct the record that in fact no negotiations had taken place.Floyd still seems to have taken the advantage in this media battle of perception given his clear and definitive calling out Pacquiao and setting a date and location for the fight to take place (May 5, in Las Vegas).

A month ago, Pacquiao said he would take a cut to fight me. Now that I called him out, he wants a big piece? Read this: tiny.cc/650ea
