‘The Game’ star Brittany Daniel dishes on being dropped to recurring status

The Game pulled in 7.7 M viewers on its BET season premiere. And even though actress Brittany Daniel was in the season opener, you might not see as much of her character “Kelly Pitts” as the season progresses. Daniel dished on how she felt about being dropped from a series regular to recurring status.

Brittany on how many shows she will be doing

What’s different for me is I was a series regular before and now I’m just a reoccurring character on the show. We did 13 episodes and I’m just contracted to do six. Another change is that we’re shooting in Atlanta and that’s different. [The Game was previously filmed in Los Angeles.]

Wow, that’s really disappointing. Did the powers that be tell you why they reduced your role?
I wasn’t happy about it, I wanted to do all the episodes but I think it was a financial thing. So I think the biggest difference for me between working for CW and BET is on the CW I made more money [laughs]. But the reason I came back to do the show is that I love the show. And I love, love the people that I work with so even though it came down to [my reduced role] I had to be supportive of the rest of the cast. I know me not showing up would affect a lot of story lines differently so I decided to be a team player anyway.
Are there any other changes in having The Game going from a network to a basic cable channel?
We’re shooting thirteen episodes at one time. So we’ll be finished with shooting thirteen episodes in a month and a half. The first day of my shooting day I did a scene from the last episode. Then after lunch you might be shooting a scene from the first episode. So that was really challenging to keep up with where you are in the story from hour to hour.

Whoa. Really? Most dramas and sitcoms take several months to shoot a whole season worth of shows.

It was challenging and weird doing it this way. Because when I was shooting an episode a week I had a whole week to absorb what my character was going thru. And I would get very connected to the character, because I’d be living it. But now it’s like, ‘Oh now I’m doing the very end of the season with all this dramatic stuff going on but we haven’t done all the scenes prior so I don’t really know where I’m at.’ Or I’m mentioning a character, like Tasha’s boyfriend and I haven’t even met the actor who plays him yet. I don’t even know who he is and I’m already talking about him. But I told myself, I’ll just do the best I can. That’s all you can do—the best you can under these circumstances.months to shoot a whole season worth of shows.
Because of your work in The Game and the black films you’ve appeared in, I hear your co-workers on the The Game say you have an inner black girl…
[Laughs] I have people come up to me and ask you really date black men don’t you and I say I do [Daniel is currently dating Keenan Ivory Wayans] and they say I can tell. And my cast members always say, ‘Oh Brittany is black, she is a sister.’ It’s so hilarious. I always end up working on African American productions. I worked with the Wayans on two movies [White Chicks and Little Man, I did The Game for a few years, and when I did Skyline Donald Faison is my boyfriend. It happens so many times.

I actually liked the premeire episode of “The Game” season 5. But I think after us fans worked so damn hard to get “The Game” back on TV then they premeired season 4 last year, it wasn’t what we thought it would be. This show has became to serious, too dramatic, not enough comedy and happyness how it was back in the day. I mean season 1-3 was the shitz and I miss it so so much. I don’t like that Derwin has become this big time football player, I don’t like mean & eveil Malik, I miss Kelly & the old Jason together, I don’t like the new Britney I want the old one back, I like that the girls couldn’t go a day without seeing each other, I miss the Sabers & the sunbeams, I miss the girls sitting around and being alcoholics (drinking their wine all day). But most of all I hate the whole Derwin having baby DJ (I so wish the baby wasn’t his, and I don’t know why I just do) I dislike and miss so much that I’ll be typing all day, but no matter how many things that I dislike I WILL FOREVER OR AS LONG AS THEY ALLOW “THE GAME” TO COME ON TV, I WILL BE A LOYAL FAN AND WATCH EVERY EPISODE LIKE I HAVE FAITHFULLY DONE ALL 5 SEASONS. I went around the web finding out what “The Game” fans like & dislike about the show, and I think I know why the viewers went from 7.7million to 5.3million (which is still a good amount):

KAH: okay I’m not happy with the show. I don’t like how they changed everybody character. I loved the old characters in the show including daughter brittany. We the fans voted to bring back the show so why would you change the characters. We did not asked to change the characters. Now we as fans would no longer be fans if you don’t bring the characters and their characteristics back that we voted for. Kelly is gone, Jason is raising his daughter, Brittany is a hot mess, Malik is in rehab, Melanie is rich and snobby and Tasha is more ghetto (smoking weed). OMG! This is ridiculous.

LuvdaGAME: OMG…I was wondering what happen to Kelly. I am such a HUGE fan of The Game, but I agree with everyone that the show has drastically changed. ALL the characters have been “DRAMAFIED” to a whole ridiculous level. As a black women, it’s important to me to keep our shows on the air, so I hope BET does not mess this show up and lose the fans. It is bad enough that we have to endure not-so-funny shows like “Let’s Stay Together” that is only getting ratings because of “The Game” fans. Now they are messing with my emotions by reducing Kelly to this angry, bitter, wannabe reality star. MESSAGE FOR BET: 1. Keep Kelly Pitts! We love the funny, happy-go-lucky character she used to be; 2. Put Jason Pitts back in the game and get those two back together; 3. For crying out loud, can we at least get one locker room scene…geesh…it is after-all called “The Game”! Some of the most hilarious scenes took place in the locker room; 4. Can Melanie stop acting like a diva and go practice medicine; 5. Can Tasha tone-down the ghettoness and get back with Rick; 6. Can Malik just play football and be the sarcastic jerk that we love; 7. Can we see more interaction between Derwin, his son (haven’t seen that boy since Episode 1) and his baby mama. And finally, let Tee Tee keep the jokes coming – he is waaaay to serious in these episodes.

Florence Williams:The Game was a favorite of many people and what BET needs to understand is Kelly is one of the GAME black white red green or yellow she is apart of the GAME bring her back. We fought for the GAME and that’s what we want. Please be careful, to change so much and so fast means it’s not the show we fought for. Subtle changes brings on interest, drastic changes means this is not our show. You fought hard and we fought hard to get you back we want the people we fought for not these strangers. Too much to fast. Don’t blame the fans if they don’t stick around, you have changed all the characters drastically, I’m surprise the writers who made the show what it is went for this. I felt like I was watching an almost new show one that hasn’t quite found it’s way not the GAME that was on point with every scene. You need to take a poll and consider your next moves carefully don’t blow this please. Your black audience loves family bring our family back please!!!!!
